Chapter 12: The Revelation
Later that evening, after the children had fallen asleep in one of the guest rooms, Kesha sat alone with Marcus in the living room again.
This time, she had something else to say.
“There’s something you should know,” she said quietly.
Marcus looked up.
“What is it?”
Kesha took a deep breath.
“In the first year after I left, I tried to contact you. Multiple times. I sent letters to your old address. I called your old number. I even reached out to your mother.”
Marcus frowned.
“I never got any letters. And my mother never told me you tried to reach out.”
Kesha gave him a sad smile.
“I know. Because she told me to stop trying. She said you had moved on and that you didn’t want anything to do with me or the baby. She also said that if I kept trying to contact you, she would make sure I regretted it.”
Marcus’s face went pale.
“She… she did that?”
Kesha nodded.
“She also made sure your new phone number and email were changed. I spent months trying to find a way to tell you about the pregnancy. Eventually, I gave up. I realized you didn’t want to be found.”
Marcus looked like he had been punched.
“I had no idea,” he whispered. “I thought you just disappeared. I thought you didn’t want me in the picture.”
Kesha’s voice was calm but firm.
“Your mother made sure of that. And you let her. You never once tried to find me either, Marcus. Not really. You were too busy starting your new life.”
Marcus ran a hand through his hair, looking devastated.
“I’m sorry,” he said. “I’m so sorry, Kesha. I should have tried harder. I should have—”
“It doesn’t matter anymore,” Kesha cut him off gently. “What matters is what happens from now on. But I needed you to know the full truth. Your mother played a much bigger role in this than you realized.”
Marcus looked toward the stairs where his mother had gone to bed earlier.
For the first time, real anger appeared on his face — not at Kesha, but at Patricia.
“I’m going to talk to her,” he said. “Tonight.”
Kesha didn’t stop him.
