Chapter 13: The Breaking Point

The breaking point came on a rainy Tuesday.

I had spent the day on the phone with creditors, lawyers, and banks. Every call ended the same way.

The debts were mine.

The marriage was legal.

Thomas had won.

I sat on the floor of my living room with the papers around me and cried until I had no tears left.

I had married a dying man out of love and pity.

He had married me to destroy me.

The breaking point was not anger.

It was exhaustion.

I called my daughter and told her everything.

She cried with me.

Then she said, “Mom, you are stronger than him. You always have been.”

Her words broke something loose inside me.

I stood up.

I looked at the papers on the floor.

I picked them up.

May you like

I was done breaking.

It was time to fight.
