Chapter 14: The Choice

The choice was simple.

I could let the debts crush me.

Or I could fight.

I chose to fight.

I hired a better lawyer. I gathered every document. I started a case against Thomas’s estate for fraud and undue influence.

The lawyer warned me it would be long and expensive.

I didn’t care.

I sold what I could. I took a part-time job. I worked every day to pay what I could while the case moved forward.

One night, I sat at the kitchen table with my daughter on the phone.

“I’m proud of you, Mom,” she said.

I smiled for the first time in weeks.

The choice was not easy.

But it was mine.

And for the first time since the funeral, I felt like I was no longer in Thomas’s trap.

I was building my own way out.
