Chapter 8: The Family Secret

The family secret came from an old letter in the box.
Thomas had written it to his brother years earlier.
She left me. She chose herself over me. I will make sure she pays for the rest of her life.
The brother had replied once.
Let it go, Thomas. She was just a girl.
Thomas had never let it go.
The family secret was simple.
Thomas had never loved anyone after me.
He had married once, divorced quickly, and spent his life building a business he then destroyed on purpose so I would inherit the ruins.
He had died with one goal.
To make me suffer the way he believed I had made him suffer.
I read the letters until my hands shook.
The boy I had loved had become a man consumed by hate.
And I had married him out of pity.
The family secret was not about money.

It was about a heart that had never healed.
And now it was trying to break mine from the grave.
