Chapter 7: The Revenge Plan

Thomas had planned his revenge for decades.
The lawyer explained it the next day.
“Thomas started preparing when he learned he was dying,” Mr. Harlan said. “He transferred all his debts into joint accounts the moment you said yes to the marriage. He made sure the will left everything to you. He wanted you to be legally responsible for the mess he created.”
I stared at the table.
“Why?” I whispered.
“Because he never forgave you for leaving him at the bus station,” the lawyer said. “He told me once, ‘She broke my heart. I will break her life.’”
The plan had been meticulous.
Thomas had married me knowing he would die soon. He had made sure the wedding was legal and public. He had made sure I signed the papers without reading them carefully.
He had wanted me to grieve him.
Then he wanted me to drown in his debts.
The revenge plan was perfect.
Except for one thing.

I was still alive.
And I was angry.
