Chapter 10: The Final Hearing
The final hearing took place on a cold morning in late November.
Emily sat beside her lawyer, Margaret Hale, wearing a simple black coat. Her father sat behind her in the gallery, his expression unreadable. Across the room, Daniel sat with his own lawyer. He looked thinner than he had a month ago. His expensive suit hung loosely on his frame, and there were dark circles under his eyes.
This wasn’t just about the divorce anymore.
This hearing was about the fraud investigation, the frozen assets, and the additional civil claims Emily had filed against him.
Margaret presented the evidence calmly and methodically. She showed the court the attempted $998,000 transaction at Aurum House. She presented the forensic audit results showing millions of dollars in suspicious transfers. She played voice recordings Daniel had left on Emily’s phone in the days after the divorce — messages where he had threatened her and tried to pressure her into dropping the investigation.
By the time Margaret finished, the judge’s expression was grim.
Daniel’s lawyer tried to argue that the transactions were “misunderstandings” and that Daniel had been under emotional stress. But the evidence was too strong.
When it was finally Daniel’s turn to speak, he looked directly at Emily for the first time that day.
“Emily,” he said, his voice hoarse. “I know I made mistakes. But this… this is destroying me. We were married for eight years. Doesn’t that mean anything to you anymore?”
Emily looked back at him without flinching.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then she spoke, her voice quiet but clear.
“You stopped being my husband the day you started sleeping with Vanessa,” she said. “You stopped being my husband the day you tried to take half of everything I built while calling me worthless. And you stopped being my husband the night you tried to spend almost a million dollars of my money to impress her.”
She paused.
“I don’t hate you, Daniel. But I also don’t owe you anything. Not anymore.”
The judge cleared his throat.
After reviewing all the evidence, he ruled in Emily’s favor on every major point. Daniel was ordered to repay the misappropriated funds, and several of his personal assets were seized as part of the settlement. The judge also approved the full forensic audit to continue under court supervision.
As they left the courtroom, Daniel didn’t try to speak to Emily again.
He simply walked out with his head down, his lawyer following behind him.
Emily stood outside the courthouse with her father. The cold wind tugged at her coat.
Richard placed a hand on her shoulder.
“It’s over,” he said quietly.
Emily nodded.
But deep down, she knew it wasn’t that simple.
