Chapter 7: The Investigation Begins
The forensic audit of Whitmore Holdings started on a Monday morning.
Richard Hayes had pulled strings with old contacts in the financial regulatory world. Within forty-eight hours, a team of independent auditors had been granted access to the company’s financial records.
What they found was worse than even Emily had expected.
Daniel hadn’t just been moving money from the pension fund. He had also been inflating company expenses, creating fake vendor accounts, and siphoning money into personal accounts under different names. Some of the money had gone to Vanessa — expensive gifts, trips, and even payments toward her luxury apartment.
The scale of the fraud was shocking.
By Wednesday, the auditors had already flagged over $4.3 million in questionable transactions.
Margaret Hale moved quickly. She filed additional civil claims against Daniel for fraud, breach of fiduciary duty, and conversion of company assets. She also contacted the major investors and board members, informing them of the ongoing investigation.
Several key investors immediately pulled their support.
By Friday, two of Daniel’s largest business deals had officially collapsed.
That same day, Daniel received a letter from the bank. His personal line of credit had been frozen pending the outcome of the investigation. His company credit cards had all been cancelled.
He was running out of money.
And he was running out of options.
That night, Daniel sat in his apartment with a bottle of whiskey and stared at his phone. He had one last card to play — one last attempt to regain control.
He opened his messages and typed a single line to Emily.
Daniel: We need to talk. This has gone too far.
He stared at the message for a long time before hitting send.
Then he waited.
Emily didn’t reply.
But the next morning, Daniel received a response — not from Emily, but from her lawyer.
It was a formal notice informing him that all future communication would go through legal channels only. Any direct contact with Emily would be considered harassment and reported to the authorities.
Daniel threw his phone across the room.
