Chapter 2: The Night They Spent What Wasn’t Theirs

At 8:40 p.m., Daniel Whitmore and Vanessa Cole walked into Aurum House, one of Manhattan’s most exclusive private clubs.
Daniel had reserved the Sapphire Room using Emily’s corporate membership — the one he had kept access to even after the divorce was filed. He walked in like he owned the place, ordering the most expensive items on the menu without hesitation.
Oysters flown in from France.
Wagyu beef towers.
Two bottles of 1982 Château Lafite Rothschild.
Diamond-dust cocktails that cost $1,200 each.
A private violinist for Vanessa’s “birthday celebration.”
When Vanessa’s eyes lingered on the jewelry display inside the club’s private boutique, Daniel didn’t even blink. He told the manager to bring the tray over.
Vanessa chose a sapphire and diamond necklace priced at $640,000.
Daniel smiled and handed over Emily’s matte-black business card — the one linked to her highest-limit corporate account.
The waiter disappeared for several minutes.
When he returned, his expression had changed completely. He looked pale and uncomfortable.
“Mr. Whitmore,” he said quietly, leaning down so only Daniel could hear, “I’m terribly sorry, but the card was declined.”
Daniel frowned. “Run it again.”
“We already did, sir. Twice.”
“Then use the backup card.”
The waiter hesitated.
“Sir… all the cards linked to this account have been restricted or cancelled. The system is flagging them as potentially compromised.”
Vanessa’s smile froze on her face.
Daniel’s expression darkened. He pulled out another card — Emily’s personal platinum card.
“Try this one.”
The waiter returned five minutes later, looking even more uncomfortable.
“I’m afraid this one was also declined, sir. In fact, all cards under the name Emily Hayes or linked to her accounts have been blocked.”
The total bill at that point had already reached $998,000.
Daniel’s face turned red. Vanessa looked around nervously as other guests began to notice the commotion.
“This is ridiculous,” Daniel snapped, standing up. “Do you know who I am? Call your manager. Now.”
The manager arrived quickly, but his answer was the same. All cards connected to Emily Hayes had been cancelled or restricted within the last few hours.
Daniel’s hands were shaking as he pulled out his own card.
The manager ran it.
Approved.
But by then, the damage was done.
Whispers had already started spreading through the club. A man who had just spent nearly a million dollars on his mistress was now struggling to pay the bill. The story would travel fast in their social circle.
Daniel threw his card on the table and stood up so fast his chair scraped loudly against the floor.
“We’re leaving,” he said through gritted teeth.
Vanessa followed him in stunned silence.
As they walked toward the exit, Daniel’s phone began buzzing nonstop with fraud alerts and declined transaction notifications.
He stopped in the middle of the lobby and stared at his screen.
Every single card connected to Emily had been frozen.
And the total attempted charge was $998,000.

And she had stopped him with the press of a few buttons.
