Chapter 6: The First Cracks
By the end of the week, Daniel’s world had started to show visible cracks.
His corporate cards were still frozen. Several of his personal accounts had been flagged for suspicious activity after the massive failed transaction at Aurum House. When he tried to withdraw cash from an ATM, the machine ate his card.
Worse than the financial problems were the social ones.
Word had already begun to spread through their circle about what happened at Aurum House. People were whispering about how Daniel Whitmore had tried to spend nearly a million dollars on his mistress — only to have every card declined. The story grew with each retelling.
Some people found it funny. Others found it pathetic.
Daniel’s business partners started asking questions. Investors who had been friendly suddenly became difficult to reach. Two major deals he had been negotiating quietly fell through without explanation.
At home, things were even worse.
Vanessa had become increasingly irritable. The sapphire necklace she had wanted so badly was now a source of tension instead of joy. She kept asking Daniel when he was going to “fix” the money situation, as if it were a minor inconvenience.
Daniel spent most of his days on the phone — with lawyers, with bankers, with people who used to take his calls immediately but now made him wait.
On Friday afternoon, he received a formal letter from Emily’s lawyer.
It stated that Emily was requesting a full forensic audit of all joint and corporate accounts from the past three years. It also informed him that she would be seeking damages for financial misconduct during the marriage.
Daniel threw the letter across the room.
He had expected Emily to be emotional. He had expected her to cry, beg, or try to negotiate.
He had not expected her to come at him like this — calm, prepared, and backed by serious legal firepower.
That evening, he sat alone in his apartment (the one Vanessa had convinced him to rent after the divorce) and stared at his phone.
He had called Emily seventeen times since the night at Aurum House.
