Chapter 11: What Was Left Behind
In the months that followed, Daniel Whitmore’s life continued to unravel.
Whitmore Holdings was restructured under new leadership. Several board members who had been loyal to Daniel were removed. The company survived, but it would never be the same.
Daniel himself moved into a small apartment in Brooklyn. The luxury cars were gone. The designer clothes were sold. He spent most of his days meeting with lawyers and trying to avoid the growing number of lawsuits being filed against him.
Vanessa had left him two weeks after the final hearing. She had no interest in staying with a man who no longer had money or status. The last Daniel heard, she was seeing someone else — another wealthy man who could give her the lifestyle she wanted.
Emily didn’t feel satisfaction when she heard the news.
She only felt tired.
One evening, she sat in her father’s living room, watching the rain fall outside the window. Richard was reading the newspaper in his usual chair.
“Dad,” she said quietly. “Do you think I did the right thing?”
Richard lowered the paper and looked at her.
“You protected yourself,” he said. “You protected what you built. And you made sure a man who tried to steal from you couldn’t do it again. Yes, Emily. You did the right thing.”
Emily was quiet for a while.
Then she asked, “Why didn’t you ever tell me to leave him earlier?”
Richard sighed.
“Because I knew you had to reach that decision on your own,” he said. “If I had pushed too hard, you would have defended him. You had to see who he really was for yourself.”
He looked at his daughter with quiet pride.
“And when you finally saw it, you didn’t break. You fought back. That’s more than most people would have done.”
Emily smiled faintly.
“I had a good teacher,” she said.
