Chapter 3: The Father’s Warning

Emily sat at her father’s kitchen table, staring at her phone as the fraud alerts kept coming in.
Richard Hayes poured two cups of coffee and placed one in front of her. He didn’t look surprised.
“How much did he try to spend?” he asked calmly.
Emily checked the notifications again.
“Almost a million dollars,” she said quietly. “At Aurum House.”
Her father let out a short, humorless laugh.
“Predictable,” he muttered. “Men like him don’t celebrate with dignity. They celebrate by spending what isn’t theirs.”
Emily looked up at him.
“You knew he would do this?”
“I suspected,” Richard replied. “Daniel has always been reckless with money that doesn’t belong to him. The moment the divorce was finalized, he probably thought he could still access your accounts for a while. Most men in his position would at least wait a few days out of caution. But Daniel… he’s arrogant. He thought he had already won.”
Emily stared down at her coffee.
“I still can’t believe he tried to spend that much in one night,” she said. “With Vanessa.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“He didn’t just try to spend your money, Emily. He tried to humiliate you with it. He wanted to show off to his mistress using the wealth you helped build. That’s not just greed. That’s cruelty.”
Emily was quiet for a long moment.
Then she asked the question that had been bothering her since the courthouse.
“Dad… why did you tell me to change the PINs so quickly? You sounded so sure he would try something tonight.”
Richard took a slow sip of coffee before answering.
“Because I’ve seen this pattern before,” he said. “When a man loses access to his wife’s money after years of relying on it, his first instinct is often to spend as much as he can before she locks him out. Especially if he has a new woman to impress.”
He looked at his daughter seriously.
“Daniel didn’t marry you for love, Emily. He married you because you were useful. And the moment you stopped being useful, he replaced you. Men like that don’t leave quietly. They try to take as much as they can on their way out.”
Emily felt something cold settle in her chest.
She had known Daniel didn’t love her the way she once loved him. But hearing her father say it so plainly still hurt.
Richard reached across the table and placed his hand over hers.
“You did the right thing by listening to me tonight,” he said. “Because now, Daniel Whitmore has just given us something very valuable.”
Emily looked up.
“What?”
May you like
Her father smiled coldly.
“Proof that he’s still trying to steal from you. And that, my dear, is going to cost him everything.”
