Chapter 10: The Weight

The next few days passed in a blur of paperwork and sleepless nights.

Elena called every morning with updates. The protective order had been granted on a temporary basis, but Richard’s legal team was already filing motions to have it dismissed. They were painting Sarah as a bitter ex-daughter with a history of “emotional outbursts.”

Sarah stopped answering unknown numbers. She kept Emily home from preschool for a few days. The apartment began to feel like a bunker.

One afternoon, while Emily napped, Sarah opened the folder of old photos she had gathered for Elena. Pictures of family gatherings. Emily at two, three, four years old. In almost every photo, someone in the family was correcting her posture, or telling her to stop crying, or making her pose for the camera when she clearly wanted to play.

Sarah had taken most of those photos herself.

She had documented the slow erosion of her daughter’s spirit and called it family.

The guilt was heavier than the anger now.

That evening, she and Emily sat on the balcony with a blanket wrapped around both of them. Emily leaned against her side, small and warm.

“Mommy?” Emily said after a long silence. “Are we bad people because Grandpa is mad at us?”

Sarah’s throat tightened.

“No, sweetheart. We’re not bad. We’re just… choosing to be safe.”

Emily was quiet again. Then she said, very softly, “I don’t want to see them anymore. Not even Grandma.”

Sarah kissed the top of her head and held her closer.

“You don’t have to.”

In that moment, the doubt that had been gnawing at her shifted. This was not about destroying the family anymore. It was about building a wall high enough that they could never reach Emily again.

She could live with the cost of that.
