Chapter 15: What I Took

Six months later, the apartment had new curtains and a small herb garden on the balcony. Emily had started first grade at a school three neighborhoods away. She laughed more easily now.

Sarah had taken a new job at a small marketing firm that valued competence over connections. The pay was lower, but she slept better.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, they sat on a blanket in the park near their building. Emily chased a butterfly with serious concentration while Sarah watched from the shade.

Her phone buzzed once. A news alert.

Thompson Properties sold to out-of-state group. Richard Thompson retires from public life.

Sarah read it, then put the phone away.

She did not feel joy. She did not feel sorrow. She felt the quiet satisfaction of a job completed.

Emily ran back to her, cheeks flushed, and collapsed onto the blanket.

“Mommy, can we get ice cream?”

Sarah smiled and brushed a strand of hair from her daughter’s forehead.

“Yes. We can get ice cream.”

As they walked toward the small cart at the edge of the park, Emily slipped her hand into Sarah’s.

“Are we happy now?” the little girl asked.

Sarah thought about the question.

They had lost a family. They had gained safety. Emily no longer flinched at sudden movements. Sarah no longer swallowed her own voice to keep the peace.

It was not the happiness she had once imagined. It was something harder earned and more honest.

“Yes,” she said. “We’re happy now.”

Emily squeezed her hand.

Sarah looked ahead at the path in front of them — ordinary, sunlit, and theirs.

She had taken everything that mattered from the people who had tried to break her daughter.

And in doing so, she had given Emily back the one thing that had always been worth fighting for.

A future that belonged only to them.
