Chapter 6: The Footage

The email arrived at 11:47 p.m.
No subject line. No message. Only an attachment and a single line at the bottom:
You should see this. Delete after watching.
Sarah sat at the kitchen table in her pajamas, laptop open. Emily had been asleep for two hours. The apartment was silent except for the low hum of the refrigerator.
She almost deleted the email without opening it. Then she clicked.
The video file was labeled with a date and time that matched the afternoon at the hotel pool.
Sarah’s mouth went dry.
She pressed play.
The footage was from a high angle, slightly grainy but clear enough. She watched herself buy the lemonade. Watched Emily stand at the edge of the pool in her yellow dress. Watched Vanessa lean in close, say something, and then give a small, deliberate push to Emily’s back.
It was not an accident.
Emily’s arms windmilled. She fell forward. The splash looked even smaller from above.
Sarah watched herself drop her purse. Watched Richard grab her arm and hold her. Watched the moment she tore free and jumped. The camera caught the exact second Richard’s face changed from control to anger.
She paused the video and rewound.
Watched Vanessa push her daughter again.
Sarah’s hands were shaking when she closed the laptop. She pressed her palms flat against the table until they stopped.
Someone at the hotel had sent this to her. Someone who had seen what happened and decided not to look away. She did not know who. She did not care right now.
She had proof.
Not just her word against her family’s. Not just a frightened child’s memory. Actual footage of Vanessa pushing a five-year-old into deep water while Richard held Sarah back.
She opened the document she had started two nights earlier.
Under the heading What they value, she added a new line.
The ability to lie without consequences.
Then she saved the video to three different places and emailed a copy to Elena Vargas with the subject line: Evidence – Pool Incident.

She did not sleep that night.
Instead she sat on the sofa with the lights off and let the cold thing inside her chest grow teeth.
