Chapter 11: An Unexpected Ally
The woman who knocked on Sarah’s door three days later was in her late fifties, with kind eyes and the tired posture of someone who had worked long shifts for too many years.
“My name is Maria Delgado,” she said. “I used to manage the pool area at the hotel. I was the one who sent you the video.”
Sarah stared at her.
Maria stepped inside when invited. She refused coffee but accepted water.
“I’ve worked for your father for eighteen years,” she said. “I’ve seen how he treats staff. How he treats family. I stayed quiet because I needed the job. But when I saw what happened to your little girl… I couldn’t stay quiet anymore.”
She reached into her bag and pulled out a small flash drive.
“There’s more on here. Older incidents. Other children. I kept records because I was afraid something like this would happen one day. I just never had the courage to use them.”
Sarah took the drive with shaking hands.
“Why now?” she asked.
Maria looked at her directly.
“Because someone finally fought back. And because I have a granddaughter Emily’s age.”
After Maria left, Sarah plugged in the drive. There were videos. Photos. Written notes dated over several years. Enough to show a pattern that went far beyond one afternoon at the pool.
