Chapter 13: The Fall

The consequences arrived faster than Sarah had expected.
Within forty-eight hours, two of the family’s largest business partners had pulled their investments, citing “reputational concerns.” A local news station ran a story about the incident, carefully worded but devastating. Vanessa’s engagement was called off by text message from her fiancé’s father.
Richard was served with papers. The protective order was made permanent. CPS closed their investigation after reviewing Maria’s evidence and the hotel footage.
Sarah watched it all from a distance.
She did not feel triumphant. She felt tired.
Emily, sensing the shift in the air, grew quieter but less afraid. The nightmares came less often. She started drawing again — pictures of their apartment, of Sarah, of a small garden they did not have yet.
One evening, Mark called.
“Dad’s selling the hotels,” he said. “He says it’s to simplify the business, but everyone knows it’s because of you. Vanessa moved out. She’s staying with a friend.”
Sarah was quiet for a moment.
“Are you okay?” she asked.
Mark gave a short, bitter laugh. “I don’t know yet. But I’m not going to fight you anymore.”
After the call, Sarah sat on the balcony and let the night air cool her face. The family she had grown up in was gone. In its place was something broken and honest.

She did not know what would rise from the ruins.
She only knew that Emily would be safe while it happened.
