Chapter 4: What They Value Most

Sarah’s apartment was small compared to the houses she had grown up in, but it was hers. Two bedrooms, a narrow balcony that overlooked a quiet street, and walls she had painted herself after the divorce. Tonight the rooms felt too quiet.

Emily had fallen asleep quickly after a warm bath and two bedtime stories. The little girl kept one hand curled around the edge of her blanket, the way she always did when she was unsettled. Sarah sat on the floor beside the bed for a long time, watching the rise and fall of her daughter’s chest.

Only when she was certain Emily was deeply asleep did she move to the living room. She poured herself a glass of water she did not drink and sat on the sofa with her laptop open, though she had no intention of working.

Her mind kept returning to the same question.

What did they care about?

Not Emily. That much was clear now. Richard had proven it at the pool. Vanessa had proven it with her shrug and her smile. Patricia and Mark had proven it by their silence.

They cared about the Thompson name.

They cared about the image of a perfect, powerful family that moved through the world as though it owned pieces of it. The boutique hotels that carried their name. The charity galas where Patricia wore the same pearls every year. The church where Richard made large, public donations and expected gratitude in return. Vanessa’s upcoming engagement to the son of a state senator. Mark’s quiet position in the family business, where he did exactly what he was told.

Sarah closed her eyes and let the list form.

Reputation.
Control.
Money that came with strings attached.
The certainty that no one would ever publicly challenge Richard Thompson.

She opened a blank document on her laptop and typed a single line at the top.

What they value.

Underneath it she began to write.

  • The Thompson name and everything attached to it.

  • Richard’s authority over the family and the business.

  • Vanessa’s perfect social standing and upcoming wedding.

  • The illusion that they were good, respectable people who only wanted what was best for everyone.

Sarah stared at the list for a long time.

She did not know yet how she would take these things. She only knew that she would. Not out of revenge in the childish sense. Out of necessity. Because if she did not, they would keep coming for Emily. They would keep testing how much Sarah was willing to endure in the name of family.

She had already answered that question at the pool.

The answer was no more.

She saved the document, closed the laptop, and walked back to Emily’s room. The little girl had kicked the blanket off one leg. Sarah covered her gently, then leaned down and pressed a kiss to her forehead.

“I’m sorry it took me so long,” she whispered.

Emily did not wake.

May you like

Sarah returned to the sofa and sat in the dark for a long time, the cold resolve inside her chest settling into something harder and more deliberate.

Tomorrow she would begin.
