Chapter 1: The Screaming

I Heard My Five-Year-Old Daughter Screaming In The Kitchen—Then I Ran In And Found My Wife Dragging Her By The Hair Across The Floor.

I had just pulled into our driveway outside Chicago when I heard the screaming from inside the house.

It was Hena.

She was only five.

I threw the front door open and started running.

Before I reached the kitchen, I heard my older daughter, Lily, shouting at the top of her lungs.

“Don’t touch my sister!”

When I burst into the room, Hena was on the floor.

My wife, Vanessa, had a fistful of her hair and was dragging her across the kitchen tiles.

Hena’s face was dirty, wet with tears, and twisted in pain.

She was kicking and crying so hard she could barely breathe.

Lily, my eight-year-old, ran straight at Vanessa.

“Leave her alone!”

Vanessa turned and slapped Lily across the face so hard that her head snapped sideways.

One side of Lily’s face turned bright red.

She stumbled and fell against a chair.

“Hena!” Lily cried.

Then she pushed herself back up and ran to her little sister anyway.

She wrapped both arms around Hena and tried to shield her with her own body.
