Chapter 12: Ordinary Perimeter

Life after the permanent orders returned to a quieter scale.
We moved back into a version of the house that no longer contained a lockable storage room used for punishment. The door was reworked; the lock was removed and the space converted to ordinary use. The silver key remained in the legal file. Hena began to enter closed rooms without freezing. Lily began to sleep through the night without facing the door.
I kept the same rule that had governed the first night: Vanessa would not be alone with them. Supervised contact continued only as the court and clinicians allowed. Outside those structured hours, the perimeter held without drama.
The screaming I had heard from the driveway belonged to a single afternoon that had permanently altered the shape of our household.
What replaced it was not perfect recovery—only the steady, practical safety of two children who no longer needed to fear a key or a locked door.
