Chapter 6: No Return

By midnight the first formal pieces were in place.
A police report existed. Medical documentation of the slap mark on Lily and the hair loss and bruising on Hena was in the file. The storage room had been noted. Temporary emergency arrangements kept both girls with me under conditions that did not include Vanessa.
I spoke to the attorney again. We scheduled the emergency filings for the next morning: temporary custody, exclusive possession of the home if needed, and a prohibition on contact that was not supervised and court-approved. I did not negotiate with Vanessa by phone or message. Any communication would go through counsel once she retained one.
Hena finally slept against my side in the temporary bedroom, one hand still gripping my shirt. Lily lay on the other side of the same bed, facing the door, as if she intended to stay awake until she was certain no one could lock it.
I sat in the chair until both of them were breathing evenly.
Vanessa had counted on me staying at work longer.
She had counted on the screaming ending before I walked in.
She had counted on the key remaining in her pocket and the storage room remaining a private method of control.
All three calculations had failed in the same hour.
I looked at the silver key on the side table, the faded tape still wrapped around it, and made the only rule that would govern everything after this night:
Vanessa would not be alone with my daughters again.
Not for an hour.
Not for a minute.

The locked door was finished.
Whatever came next—court, evaluation, permanent orders—would begin from that single, non-negotiable fact.
