Chapter 9: Permanent Perimeter

By the end of the first month the temporary structure had hardened into a clear direction.
The court maintained sole custody with me and kept contact with Vanessa under strict supervision if it occurred at all. The storage-room evidence and the injury documentation remained central. Vanessa’s narrative of “discipline” and “false allegations” did not displace the physical record or the girls’ consistent accounts.
I returned the house to a condition that no longer included a lockable room used for punishment. The silver key was entered into the formal file and left there. Hena began to sleep without gripping my shirt every night. Lily began to leave the doorway unwatched for longer stretches. Progress was measured in small, ordinary recoveries rather than dramatic statements.
Vanessa had used darkness and a locked door as tools.
Those tools were gone.
The orders now in place ensured she would not regain the ability to use them—or any substitute—against either of my daughters.
