Chapter 14: Closed File

The silver key stayed in the legal file and was never returned to circulation.

The storage room had long since been converted; the lock was gone, the space ordinary. I did not keep photographs of it on my phone or revisit the details unless a formal process required it. Vanessa’s later attempts, through counsel, to revise the narrative or expand contact were answered with the existing orders and declined. I did not engage beyond that.

The girls asked fewer questions as time passed. When they did, I answered with the same clarity I had used from the beginning: some things that happened were wrong, the court made rules to keep them safe, and those rules were still in place. They accepted the outline and returned to their own lives. Childhood, once protected, had little interest in maintaining the architecture of fear.
