Chapter 13: The Aftermath
Julian’s decline was not dramatic in the way of public scandals. It was quieter, and in some ways more devastating.
Without Claire’s financial stability behind him, the fragile structure of his business began to weaken. Partners who had tolerated his mismanagement when the debt appeared resolved suddenly became cautious. A few pending contracts stalled. Others were quietly withdrawn.
Elena did not stay long.
Once it became clear that Julian no longer had access to the lifestyle he had promised her, the relationship deteriorated. Within a month, she had taken a position at another company and removed herself from his life with the same speed she had once entered it.
Julian’s parents, faced with the social embarrassment of their son’s failed marriage and collapsing affairs, began to distance themselves as well. The same people who had helped pack Claire’s belongings into trash bags now spoke of “letting Julian handle his own consequences.”
Claire received all of this information secondhand, through legal updates and mutual acquaintances.
She did not celebrate it.
She also did not pity him.
