Chapter 3: The Contract

Julian snatched the document off the counter and began scanning it, his confidence draining with every line.

Claire watched him silently.

She had spent weeks preparing this. The debt had never been a simple act of generosity. It had been a calculated move. Julian’s business had been drowning, and he had been desperate enough to sign anything she placed in front of him.

The agreement was clear.

In exchange for clearing the one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, Claire secured a controlling interest in the primary marital assets, including the house that had been purchased in her name before the marriage and later used as leverage. The contract also contained a clause that activated full protective ownership once the debt was marked as paid in full.

Julian’s hands began to tremble slightly as he reached the final page.

“This… this can’t be enforceable.”

“It is,” Claire replied. “Your signature is notarized. The funds were transferred through the proper channels. Everything is documented.”

His mother stepped closer, her voice sharp.

“What does that mean?”

Claire turned her calm gaze on the older woman.

“It means this house belongs to me. The furnishings belong to me. And any attempt to remove my belongings or force me out constitutes a legal violation.”

Elena let out a short, disbelieving laugh.

“You’re seriously trying to claim the house after he already told you to leave?”

Claire looked at her.

“I’m not trying to claim anything. I already own it. You’re the one standing in my kitchen wearing my clothes and drinking from my cup.”

Julian slammed the paper down.

“You set me up.”

“No,” Claire said quietly. “You underestimated me. There’s a difference.”

His father finally spoke, his voice low and tense.

“Julian, is this true? Did you actually sign something without reading it?”

Julian’s silence was answer enough.

Claire picked up her purse again and walked toward the coffee machine, as if the conversation were already finished.

“You have one hour,” she said without turning around. “To take your things and leave. That includes Elena. That includes the trash bags. And that includes the divorce papers you so confidently placed on my counter.”

She poured herself a cup of coffee, then finally looked back at them.

“After that, anyone still inside this house will be removed by security.”
