Chapter 6: Elena Breaks

Elena was the first to break.

She stood near the archway in her thin slip, arms wrapped around herself, watching the situation collapse in real time. The confidence she had carried into the kitchen that morning was gone. In its place was the pale realization that she had stepped into something far bigger than a simple affair.

“Julian,” she said carefully, “what does this actually mean for me?”

He didn’t answer her. He was still staring at the contract on the counter as if rereading it would change the words.

Claire watched the exchange with quiet detachment.

“It means,” Claire said, “that you have no legal right to be in this house. It means the robe you put on this morning was never yours to wear. And it means whatever promises Julian made you are now worthless.”

Elena’s face flushed.

“I didn’t know about any of this. He told me the house was his. He told me you were only staying because of the debt.”

Claire tilted her head slightly.

“And you believed that made it acceptable to move into another woman’s home while she was still legally married to him?”

Elena opened her mouth, then closed it again.

Julian finally looked up.

“Don’t talk to her,” he snapped at Claire. “This is between us.”

Claire’s expression remained calm.

“No. The moment you brought her into my kitchen and told me to leave, it stopped being only between us.”

Elena took a step back, suddenly eager to put distance between herself and the marble island.

“I should go,” she muttered.

“Yes,” Claire agreed. “You should.”

Elena grabbed her clothes from the side chair and hurried toward the hallway bathroom. A minute later, she emerged dressed in the outfit she had arrived in, her earlier arrogance completely stripped away.

She paused near the door and looked at Julian.

“You said this would be simple.”

Julian didn’t respond.

Elena let out a short, bitter breath and left the house without another word.

The front door closed behind her with a sharp finality.

Claire turned her attention back to Julian and his parents.

“One down,” she said evenly. “Three to go.”
