Chapter 5: The Ownership

Claire opened a folder on her phone and turned the screen toward Julian.
“These are the property records,” she said. “The house was purchased in my name before we married. During the marriage, it was listed as a shared asset for tax and financing purposes. When you needed capital, this property was used as security. The agreement you signed restored sole ownership to me the moment the debt was cleared.”
Julian’s mother sat down heavily on one of the kitchen stools.
“So you’re saying… we have no claim here?”
“None,” Claire replied. “And any further attempt to remove my belongings will be treated as theft.”
Elena had gone very quiet. The silk robe now lay folded on the chair, and she suddenly looked much younger and far less certain of her place in the room.
Julian ran a hand through his hair.
“Claire… we can still talk about this. The divorce doesn’t have to be like this. We can negotiate.”
Claire almost smiled.
“You already negotiated,” she said. “Yesterday, when you accepted the money. This morning, when you told me my job was done. There is nothing left to discuss.”
She glanced at the clock on the wall.
“You now have forty-five minutes.”
Julian stared at her as if seeing her for the first time.
The woman he had married.
The woman he had used.
The woman he had fully intended to throw away once she was no longer financially convenient.
She had never raised her voice.
She had never pleaded.
And somehow, she was the only person in the room still standing with complete control.
Claire picked up her coffee again.
“I suggest you start with Elena’s things,” she said calmly. “They shouldn’t take long.”
No one moved at first.
Then, slowly, the reality of the situation settled over all of them.
The house was hers.
May you like
The power was hers.
And the people who had come to discard her were now the ones who had to leave.
