Chapter 1: The Perfect Celebration

The Grand Ballroom of the Sterling Estate in the Hamptons was a cathedral of absolute wealth. Towering arches of pastel balloons swayed beneath crystal chandeliers, casting fractured rainbows over tailored tuxedos and custom gowns. White orchids and imported champagne filled the air. This was the one-month celebration of Leo Sterling, the fourth-generation heir to the multi-billion-dollar Sterling financial empire.

In the center of this perfect universe stood Avery Sterling.

She wore an off-the-shoulder floral gown, dark hair pinned with diamonds. To the flashing cameras, she was the modern fairy tale: the girl from a modest background who had captured New York’s most eligible billionaire, Liam Sterling.

But behind her practiced smile, Avery’s chest was tight. For three years, she had survived the icy stares, whispered mockeries, and psychological warfare from her mother-in-law, Victoria Sterling.

Victoria stood beside Liam like a queen, silver hair in a perfect twist, pearls gleaming. She smiled for the cameras but her eyes on Avery were cold. “You look… adequate tonight, dear,” she said loudly enough for nearby guests to hear. “Though the dress is a bit busy for someone with your… background.”

Avery’s fingers tightened around her clutch. She had chosen this gown herself. Victoria had sent three stylists with “suggestions” that all looked like funeral attire for the poor.

Liam laughed nervously. “Mother, not tonight.”

Victoria patted his arm. “I’m only being honest, darling. We have standards.”

The guests chuckled politely. Avery smiled through it. She had learned to smile through everything.

The cake was brought out—five tiers of imported cream and gold leaf. Victoria insisted on cutting the first slice “for the family legacy.” She handed Avery a plate with the smallest piece.

“Eat up,” Victoria whispered. “You’ll need your strength. Raising a Sterling heir is harder than catching one.”

Avery took the plate. Her hands didn’t shake. She had learned not to let them.

As the evening continued, Victoria’s cruelty stayed subtle but constant: correcting Avery’s posture, questioning her choice of nanny, reminding everyone how “lucky” Avery was to have been chosen.

Liam stayed quiet. He always stayed quiet when his mother spoke.

Avery endured it because she loved her husband and her son.

But tonight, something in her was reaching its limit.

The celebration was perfect on the surface.

Underneath, it was suffocating.

And Avery was running out of air.
