Chapter 11: The Cost
The cost arrived in pieces.
Grant lost the Greenwich estate. The mortgage had been under Voss Meridian’s control. The bank notice arrived on a Tuesday. Moving trucks came on Friday.
Margaret moved into a smaller house. She told friends it was a “simplification.” They stopped returning her calls.
Charles sold his golf club membership to cover losses.
Lauren’s boutique closed. She posted a tearful Instagram story about “betrayal” and disappeared.
Savannah gave birth to a boy. Grant visited twice, then less. Savannah called Evelyn for help. Evelyn did not answer.
Evelyn did not watch their fall with joy.
She watched it with the quiet relief of someone who had finally closed a door she should have closed years earlier.
Margaret called one last time.
“You took everything,” she said.
“I took back what was mine,” Evelyn replied. “You took seven years of my life. Consider us even.”
She ended the call.
The cost was not loud.
