Chapter 5: The First Strike

Evelyn’s first strike was quiet and surgical.

On Monday, she called an emergency meeting of Harper Maritime’s board. Grant arrived early, prepared with charm and arguments, still believing Evelyn was the same woman who had spent seven years making his life easier.

She was not.

She sat at the head of the table in a simple black suit and listened as Grant presented a plan to restructure the company under his leadership.

When he finished, she spoke once.

“Harper Maritime will be divested at fair market value,” she said. “The proceeds will fund a foundation for single mothers and children in transitional housing.”

The room went silent.

Grant’s face turned white. “You can’t do this.”

“I already have.”

Margaret, attending by video, leaned forward. “This is personal.”

Evelyn looked directly at the screen. “No. This is business. Your company was losing money. Voss Meridian is streamlining. You were the weak link.”

Grant tried one last time in the hallway. “After everything we gave you—”

Evelyn stopped. “You gave me a suitcase on the porch and sixty thousand dollars. I gave you seven years of my life. Consider this repayment for the car you kept.”

She walked away without looking back.

By the end of the week, Grant lost three major contracts. Investors pulled out. The board voted to remove him as CEO.

Savannah called, voice sweet and trembling. “We’re having a baby. Don’t you care?”

Evelyn replied, “I care that you’re bringing a child into a family that throws women away when they’re no longer convenient. I hope you’re better prepared than I was.”

The first strike had landed.

The family that had discarded her was beginning to feel what it meant to be on the other side of power.
