Chapter 8: The Legal War
The legal war began the following Monday.
Grant and Margaret filed an emergency motion claiming undue influence and mental incompetence on August Voss’s part. They asked the court to freeze all assets related to Harper Maritime and block Evelyn from making decisions.
Evelyn’s team responded the same day with the will, medical confirmation of August’s competence, and financial records showing Harper Maritime’s losses under Grant’s leadership.
The judge set an expedited hearing.
In the hallway, Grant tried one last time.
“We can still fix this,” he said. “A quiet settlement. You keep some shares. We keep the company.”
Evelyn looked at him. “You embarrassed me the night you handed me divorce papers in front of your pregnant mistress. The only thing left to be embarrassed about is how long I stayed.”
The hearing was short.
Evelyn’s team won on every major point.
The divestment would proceed.
Grant left the courthouse with Margaret, both silent.
