Chapter 10: The Reckoning

The reckoning happened in the Greenwich estate on a rainy afternoon.
Evelyn arrived without announcement.
Margaret met her in the living room.
“You came to gloat,” Margaret said.
Evelyn placed a folder on the coffee table.
“The final divestment papers, the settlement for the estate, and a check for everything I spent supporting this family for seven years.”
Margaret stared at the check.
“You think money erases what you’ve done?”
“I think money is the only language you ever respected,” Evelyn replied. “Take it. Leave the house. Leave my life. And never speak my name again.”
Margaret’s hand trembled as she picked up the check.
“You were nothing when Grant brought you home.”
“I was enough,” Evelyn said. “You simply needed me to be less.”
She turned to leave.
Margaret’s voice followed her. “You will be alone.”
Evelyn stopped.
“I was alone the entire time I was here,” she said. “Now I am free.”
She walked out into the rain without looking back.
