Chapter 4: The Family’s Shock

Grant learned the truth the next morning when his assistant forwarded the Voss Meridian board summary.

He sat at the breakfast table, staring at the document until the letters blurred. Savannah was beside him, scrolling her phone. Margaret poured tea with perfect poise.

“What is it?” Margaret asked.

Grant’s voice was hoarse. “Evelyn owns Voss Meridian. Which means she owns us.”

The teacup slipped from Margaret’s hand and shattered.

Savannah’s hand flew to her stomach. “She signed the divorce papers. She knew?”

Margaret’s face turned cold. “She sat there and let us throw her out while she already controlled everything.”

Charles looked up from his newspaper, pale. “The debt… the silent investor… it was her grandfather?”

Grant stood so fast the chair fell backward. “I need to talk to her.”

Margaret’s laugh was bitter. “She doesn’t need to talk to you anymore, darling. You handed her the pen.”

Lauren finally looked up from her phone. “So the money I asked for… she could have given more?”

The realization settled over the table like frost.

Every bill Evelyn had quietly paid.
Every presentation she had rewritten.
Every time they had called her the “little librarian wife.”

All of it had been watched by the woman who now owned the empire keeping them afloat.

Grant paced the room. “This is revenge.”

Margaret’s eyes narrowed. “No. This is consequence. And we are not finished yet.”

But they all knew the truth.

The woman they had thrown into the rain now held every door they had ever walked through.

And she was no longer asking for permission to open them.
