Chapter 11: The Suspicious Death
Finnley couldn’t stop thinking about his father’s death.
According to Reagan, Camden Dennis had died of cancer. But the more Finnley read the medical records from the storage unit, the more things didn’t add up.
His father had been diagnosed with early-stage cancer, but the doctors had been optimistic about his recovery. Then suddenly, within a few weeks, his condition had worsened rapidly. The toxicology report showed traces of a substance that could speed up the decline of someone who was already sick.
Finnley took the records to Leonard Hale.
The old lawyer read through them carefully before speaking.
“These results are concerning,” he said. “If your father was being given something that worsened his condition, that could be considered suspicious. But proving it after cremation will be very difficult.”
Finnley clenched his fists.
“I don’t need to prove she killed him in court,” he said. “I just need to know the truth.”
Leonard looked at him seriously.
“Be careful, Finnley. If Reagan and Carter believe you’re digging into his death, they might become even more dangerous.”
Finnley nodded.
He already knew they were dangerous.
But he was no longer the same man who had walked out of prison three weeks ago. He had evidence now. He had a plan. And he was no longer willing to stay quiet.
That night, Finnley sat alone in his motel room and read his father’s letter again.
He could almost hear Camden’s voice in the words.
Be careful, son.
Finnley folded the letter and put it back into the envelope.
