Chapter 13: The Legal Battle
The legal process moved faster than Finnley expected.
With Leonard Hale handling the case and the new will as strong evidence, the court quickly accepted the new will as valid. Reagan and Carter were forced to return the house and most of the assets they had taken.
At the same time, Finnley filed a civil lawsuit to recover the money that had been stolen from the company. The evidence from the storage unit was overwhelming. Carter’s involvement in the theft became impossible to deny.
During the court hearing, Finnley finally got the chance to clear his name.
The judge reviewed the documents and ruled that there was no credible evidence linking Finnley to the theft. The original charges against him were formally dismissed.
For the first time in three years, Finnley was no longer a convicted criminal in the eyes of the law.
When the hearing ended, Reagan and Carter walked out of the courtroom without looking at him. Their lawyer followed behind, looking defeated.
Finnley stood outside the courthouse for a long time after they left.
He had won.
But the victory felt strangely empty.
