Chapter 15: The Letter He Left
Three months later, Finnley stood at Pinecrest Cemetery.
He had finally arranged for a small memorial stone to be placed next to his mother’s grave. Even though his father’s body had been cremated, Finnley wanted a place where he could come to remember him.
The stone was simple. It only had one line:
Camden Dennis
Father. Fighter. Believer in the truth.
Finnley stood in front of the stone for a long time. The wind was cold, but he didn’t mind.
He took out the old letter from his coat pocket and read it one last time.
Then he spoke quietly.
“I did it, Dad,” he said. “I got everything back. And I know the truth now.”
He paused.
“I’m sorry I couldn’t save you. But I promise I won’t let what happened to you happen to anyone else.”
He placed the letter gently on top of the stone.
The wind picked it up for a moment before settling it back down.
Finnley stood there a little longer, then turned and walked away.
He didn’t look back.
For the first time in years, Finnley Dennis was finally free.
Not just from prison.
