Chapter 9: The Counterattack
Reagan and Carter didn’t stay quiet for long.
Three days after Finnley showed them the will, their lawyer contacted Leonard Hale. They claimed the new will was fake and that Camden Dennis had been mentally unstable in his final weeks. They also accused Finnley of forging the document.
At the same time, strange things started happening.
Finnley received threatening phone calls from unknown numbers. Someone followed him when he left the motel. One night, the window of his motel room was smashed.
He knew it was Reagan and Carter’s doing.
Instead of getting scared, Finnley became more careful. He moved to a different motel and started recording every threat he received. He also asked Leonard to speed up the legal process.
One evening, while he was eating dinner alone, his new phone rang. It was an unknown number.
He answered.
A distorted voice spoke.
“Stop what you’re doing, Finnley. Or you’ll end up like your father.”
Finnley didn’t reply. He simply hung up and saved the recording.
Later that night, he called Leonard.
“They’re getting desperate,” he said.
Leonard’s voice was calm.
“Good. Desperate people make mistakes. Keep collecting evidence. We’re going to need it.”
Finnley looked out the window of his motel room.
