Chapter 11: The Breaking Point

Richard no longer waited.

The morning after the family dinner, he walked into the office of his longtime attorney, Margaret Hale, carrying a sealed folder. Inside were copies of the bridal lounge footage, bank records, the private investigator’s reports, and every document related to the lake house transfer.

Margaret reviewed everything in silence.

When she finally looked up, her expression was grim.

“This is not just marital betrayal,” she said. “This is a coordinated effort to move assets under false pretenses. If even half of this holds up, Eleanor and Harper could be facing serious legal consequences.”

Richard sat across from her, his hands folded tightly.

“I don’t want a public spectacle,” he said. “But I also won’t let them walk away with everything they planned to take.”

Margaret nodded.

“Then we move carefully. First, we freeze any further transfers. Second, we prepare for a formal confrontation. And third… you need to decide how much of this you’re willing to show Preston.”

Richard looked down at the folder.

That was the part that hurt the most.

Exposing Eleanor and Harper meant destroying his son’s marriage and possibly the only version of family Preston had ever believed in.

But protecting the lie would mean allowing the betrayal to continue.

Richard closed the folder.

“Prepare everything,” he said. “I’ll handle Preston myself.”

That afternoon, he returned home and found Eleanor in the garden, calmly pruning roses as if the world were still intact.

She glanced up when she saw him.

“You’re home early.”

Richard stopped a few feet away.

“I’ve made a decision,” he said.

Eleanor’s hands stilled on the shears.

“And what decision is that?”

Richard looked at her for a long moment.

“I’m done pretending I don’t know.”

Then he turned and walked back into the house, leaving her standing alone among the roses.
