Chapter 5: The Lake House

On the third day, Richard drove out to the lake house alone.

The property had been in the Sterling family for over twenty years. It was the place where he and Eleanor had spent summer weekends when Preston was young. It was also one of the most valuable assets they owned.

Now the deed was in Preston and Harper’s names.

Richard walked through the empty house slowly. Everything still looked the same — the large windows overlooking the water, the wooden floors, the stone fireplace.

But nothing felt the same.

He sat down at the kitchen table and opened the folder of documents he had brought with him.

According to the paperwork, the transfer had been prepared weeks in advance. Eleanor’s signature was on several of the preliminary forms. She had known about the gift long before Richard had even decided to give it.

He remembered how emotional she had been at the wedding. How she had cried during the ceremony and told him how proud she was of the life they had built for their son.

All of it had been an act.

Richard closed the folder and looked out at the lake.

He thought about the video again.

Eleanor’s cold voice.

Harper’s quiet compliance.

The black envelope changing hands.

They had not just betrayed him.

They had used his love for his son and his unborn grandchild as a weapon.

Richard stood up and walked to the large window.

He had spent his entire adult life building power, wealth, and control.

Now he was going to use all of it.

Not to destroy his family out of anger.

But to expose the truth — no matter how much it cost him.

As he drove back toward the city, one thing became clear.

The next time he looked Eleanor in the eyes, he would no longer be the husband who trusted her.

May you like

He would be the man who already knew everything.

And he was ready to make her face it.
