Chapter 6: The Confrontation

Richard waited until evening.
Eleanor was in the living room, sitting on the sofa with a glass of white wine, scrolling through photos from the wedding on her phone. She looked completely at ease — the same elegant, composed woman the entire city believed her to be.
Richard stood in the doorway for a moment, watching her.
Then he walked in and placed his phone on the coffee table in front of her.
The screen was already open to the bridal lounge video.
Eleanor looked up, confused.
“What is this?”
“Press play,” Richard said quietly.
She hesitated, then tapped the screen.
The moment her own voice came through the speakers, her entire body went still.
On the video, she told Harper to keep playing her part. She spoke about moving assets after the baby was born. She touched Harper’s face with a familiarity that left no room for misinterpretation.
When the video ended, the room was silent.
Eleanor slowly set the phone down.
For several seconds, she said nothing. Then she looked up at Richard with a carefully controlled expression.
“It’s not what you think.”
Richard let out a short, humorless breath.
“Don’t insult me, Eleanor. I watched it three times. I know exactly what I saw.”
She stood up, smoothing her dress as if she could somehow smooth the situation as well.
“You’re overreacting. Harper was emotional. I was trying to calm her down. People say strange things when they’re under pressure.”
“You talked about moving assets,” Richard said coldly. “You talked about leaving. You handed her an envelope of money.”
Eleanor’s jaw tightened.
“You’re twisting it.”
“No,” Richard replied. “I’m finally seeing it clearly.”
He took a step closer.
“How long?”
Eleanor didn’t answer.
“How long have you and Harper been planning this?” he asked again, his voice low and controlled. “How long have you been using our son?”
Her eyes flashed with something colder.
“You don’t get to stand there and act like the victim, Richard. You’ve spent the last thirty years married to your company. Preston and I were just background noise in your empire.”
Richard stared at her.
“So this is revenge? You decided to destroy our family because you felt neglected?”
Eleanor gave a small, bitter smile.
“This isn’t about revenge. This is about survival. And about choosing something real for once.”
Richard felt something inside him go completely still.
“Something real,” he repeated. “With our son’s wife.”
Eleanor didn’t deny it.
She simply looked at him with a calm that made the betrayal even worse.
“You can rage all you want,” she said quietly. “But the lake house is already in their names. The money has already started moving. And if you try to expose this, you’ll destroy Preston in the process.”
Richard studied her for a long moment.
Then he picked up his phone from the table.
“You made one serious mistake, Eleanor.”
She raised an eyebrow.
“What’s that?”
Richard’s voice was ice.
“You assumed I would still protect this family the same way I always have.”
He turned and walked out of the room without another word.

Behind him, Eleanor remained standing by the sofa, her wine glass still untouched.
For the first time, she looked uncertain.
