Chapter 14: The Quiet

Months passed.

The divorce was finalized. The lake house was returned to Richard’s sole ownership. Eleanor moved into a smaller residence across the city. Harper eventually left the state after the legal pressure became too much.

Preston remained in the city, but he and Richard saw each other only occasionally. The damage between them was deep. Trust, once broken in such a profound way, did not return easily.

Richard spent most of his evenings alone in the large, quiet house that had once been filled with the performance of a perfect family.

He often found himself thinking about the bridal lounge footage.

Not because he wanted to relive the betrayal — but because it had been the moment everything false finally became visible.

One night, he sat in his study with a glass of whiskey and the tablet on the desk in front of him. He did not play the video. He simply looked at the frozen image of Eleanor and Harper in that white room.

He thought about how carefully the lie had been constructed.

How long it had been allowed to grow.

How much he had refused to see.

For the first time in his life, Richard Sterling had no empire to expand, no deal to close, no image to protect.

There was only the quiet.

And the truth.
