Chapter 12: The Reckoning

Two days later, Richard arranged a meeting at the lake house.
He told Preston it was about finalizing some paperwork related to the property. He told Eleanor the same. He did not tell Harper anything at all — he simply made sure she would be there.
When they all arrived, the atmosphere was already tense.
The four of them stood in the large living room overlooking the water. Preston looked confused. Harper looked uneasy. Eleanor remained composed, but her eyes never left Richard.
Richard did not waste time.
He placed a tablet on the coffee table and pressed play.
The bridal lounge footage filled the silent room.
Preston watched in growing disbelief as his mother’s voice filled the air, speaking about moving assets, keeping up appearances, and leaving once the baby was born. He watched Eleanor touch Harper’s face. He watched Harper accept the black envelope without hesitation.
When the video ended, no one spoke.
Preston’s face had gone pale.
“What… what is this?” he whispered.
Richard looked at his son.
“This is the truth,” he said quietly. “Your mother and your wife have been working together. The wedding, the lake house, the money — it was all part of a plan.”
Harper took a step back.
“That’s not—”
“Don’t,” Richard cut her off. “The footage speaks for itself.”
Eleanor finally spoke, her voice cold and controlled.
“You’re destroying your own son for the sake of your pride.”
Richard turned to her.
“No. You destroyed him the moment you decided to use him as a tool.”
Preston looked from his mother to his wife, then back again.
“Is it true?” he asked, his voice breaking. “Mom… Harper… is any of this true?”
For the first time, Eleanor did not have a perfect answer ready.
Harper’s eyes filled with tears, but she said nothing.
The silence was answer enough.
Preston took a shaky step backward, as if the floor itself had shifted beneath him.
“I need to get out of here,” he said.
He turned and walked out of the lake house without looking back.
Richard watched him go, feeling something inside his chest crack open.
Behind him, Eleanor’s voice was quiet and bitter.
“Congratulations, Richard. You’ve just ruined everything.”
May you like
Richard turned to face her one last time.
“No,” he said. “I finally stopped letting you ruin it in secret.”
