Chapter 13: The Fall
The days that followed were brutal.
Preston moved out of the apartment he shared with Harper within forty-eight hours. He refused to take her calls. He refused to see his mother. The only person he would speak to was Richard, and even those conversations were short and strained.
Harper tried to control the narrative at first. She claimed the video had been taken out of context. She claimed Eleanor had only been offering support. But the evidence was too clear, and too many financial records supported Richard’s claims.
Eleanor, true to form, attempted to maintain her public image. She attended one final charity event with a perfect smile and carefully chosen words. But the cracks were already showing. Whispers spread quickly through their social circle. People who had once praised her began keeping their distance.
Within two weeks, the legal process began in earnest.
Richard filed for divorce. He also moved to reverse the lake house transfer on the grounds of fraud and misrepresentation. Harper’s access to family accounts was frozen. Eleanor’s hidden transfers were exposed.
The Sterling family, once a symbol of stability and success, was now the subject of quiet gossip and legal filings.
One evening, Preston came to Richard’s house. He looked exhausted, older than his years.
“I keep replaying everything,” he said. “Every conversation. Every time Mom encouraged me to trust Harper. Every time Harper told me how lucky she was to have me.”
Richard sat across from him in silence.
“I don’t know who to believe anymore,” Preston continued. “I don’t even know if the baby is mine.”
Richard had no comforting words to offer.
All he could do was sit with his son in the quiet and let the truth settle between them.
