Chapter 8: The Truth Unravels

Over the next several days, the private investigator Richard had hired began sending reports.

Each one made the picture clearer — and uglier.

Harper had not entered Preston’s life by chance.

She had been introduced to him through a mutual acquaintance at a charity event that Eleanor herself had helped organize. At the time, Harper had been working as a junior coordinator for a small non-profit. Within months of meeting Preston, she had quit her job and moved into a better apartment.

There were also records of private meetings between Eleanor and Harper dating back almost a year before the engagement.

Coffee shops. Hotel lounges. A rented apartment in a quiet part of the city that neither Richard nor Preston had ever known about.

The investigator also uncovered something else.

Harper’s financial situation before meeting Preston had been unstable. Student debt. Late rent payments. Then, suddenly, after she became involved with the Sterling family, large unexplained deposits began appearing in her accounts.

Richard sat in his study late one night, reading the report under the dim light of his desk lamp.

It was no longer just an affair.

It was a calculated operation.

Eleanor had found a young woman who was ambitious, attractive, and financially vulnerable. She had guided her toward Preston. She had helped shape the relationship. And when the pregnancy happened, it became the final piece of leverage they needed to secure assets.

Richard leaned back in his chair and closed his eyes.

He thought about all the times Eleanor had encouraged the relationship. All the times she had told him how perfect Harper was for Preston. All the times she had cried happy tears about becoming a grandmother.

Every single moment had been part of the performance.

And he had believed all of it.
