Chapter 11: Restoration Underway

By the third month restoration had moved from protective measures into active recovery.

Portions of the extracted funds were frozen pending final orders. Civil claims advanced alongside the criminal matters. The house was formally released from the earlier restrictions and returned to my sole control under the original title that had never been legally transferred. I walked through the rooms without escort for the first time since the arrests. The guest wing was empty. The downstairs office had been cleared of Derek’s temporary systems. The ceiling locations where the cameras had operated were left untouched until all evidentiary needs were confirmed complete.

Company operations stabilized under the supervised structure. Employees who had remained focused on the work itself continued. Those who had aligned too closely with Derek’s two-year management found their roles adjusted or ended. I did not perform public explanations. The record was sufficient. My father’s company had been extracted from under me through forgery and controlled silence. The silence was finished. The forgery was documented. Control was returning through ordinary legal mechanisms rather than through confrontation.

Derek and Marlene remained under the combined weight of the assault case and the financial charges. Plea discussions surfaced and were measured against the strength of the evidence package. Elena advised on each development without urgency. The original decision to let them reach for one final thing on the morning of the arrests had removed most of the room they might have used for narrative revision. The briefcase, the drive, and the forged document seized on the porch continued to function as the closing exhibits they had created themselves.

I began the slower personal reconstruction. Sleep returned in uneven stages. The hypervigilance that had been necessary during the six weeks of evidence collection eased as the protective orders held and the case advanced without requiring my constant presence. I did not celebrate. Celebration was irrelevant. Completion of the record and the recovery of what had been taken were the only metrics that mattered.
