Chapter 7: Formal Ground
By the end of the first day the formal ground under Derek and Marlene had shifted permanently.
Both were held while the assault charges and the initial financial counts were processed. The overnight recording from the smoke-detector camera, the documented bruises, and the consistent statement I had given at the hospital left little room for a domestic-misunderstanding defense. The briefcase, the portable drive, and the forged voting-authorization document seized on the porch added the clear final act of attempted concealment and continued theft under pressure.
Elena coordinated the protective orders. The house that had belonged to my father was placed under formal restriction. Derek and Marlene were prohibited from returning, from contacting me directly, and from accessing any remaining company systems. The primary accounts remained frozen pending full forensic review. Secondary accounts tied to Marlene were flagged and isolated.
I did not visit the house that day. Elena’s team handled the initial preservation of devices and paper files under warrant. I remained in the secure temporary location and reviewed the synchronized evidence package one more time: the 3:07 a.m. footage, the failed login attempts after the quiet freeze, the investor meeting conducted under material misrepresentation, and the morning removal of the physical records. The sequence required no embellishment. It was complete on its own.

Derek’s first attempt at narrative control came through a public defender who suggested the overnight incident had been an argument that escalated and that the financial questions were the result of temporary confusion over estate paperwork. Elena answered with the indexed transfers, the forged authorization, and the camera record of them packing the evidence into a briefcase and purse after discovering the accounts no longer moved. The suggestion of confusion did not survive the documentation.
Marlene remained silent in the early hours. Silence had always been her preferred tool when the ground became unstable. It no longer protected her.
