Chapter 14: Restored Ground

The house and the company became ordinary again.
I walked the rooms without checking ceilings for lenses. The guest wing stayed empty. The downstairs office operated under systems I controlled. The blue light of the smoke-detector camera that had recorded 3:07 a.m. was no longer necessary; its work was complete and permanently stored. I slept without listening for footsteps in the hallway. The hypervigilance required during the six weeks of evidence collection had served its purpose and then receded.
Elena closed the active file once the recovery actions and the criminal outcomes reached finality. She kept the sealed evidence package in secure storage according to protocol. I never asked to review the 3:07 a.m. footage again. I had watched it enough times in the hospital and in the early days of the case. Its function had been to prove sequence and intent. That function was finished.

Occasional information about Derek or Marlene reached me through formal channels and was received as news about people who no longer held any claim on my daily life. No late apology arrived that fully owned the pattern of theft and the night of the forced awakening. None was required. Accountability had been established through the record, not through personal reconciliation.
I rebuilt the operational rhythm my father had left. Contracts were reviewed with the same precision I had once applied to audit packages. Decisions were made without the background calculation of whether Derek would override them or whether Marlene would reinterpret them in the guest wing. The ground under the company and the house was stable because the people who had treated both as inventory had been removed by documented process.
