Chapter 9: Reclamation

By the end of the second week the reclamation had taken solid form.
Protective orders covering me and the property were extended. Derek and Marlene remained prohibited from contact, from approaching the house, and from any interference with company operations. The assault case proceeded on the strength of the recording and the medical documentation. The financial case expanded as additional transfers were confirmed and the forged authorization was formally challenged.
I returned to the house under escort only long enough to retrieve personal items and to walk through the rooms that had belonged to my father. The guest wing was empty. The downstairs office still carried the faint order of the investor meeting that had been conducted while the accounts were already locked. I did not linger. The house was no longer a site of ongoing control. It was evidence and property under restoration.
Elena provided daily summaries without drama. The company accounts would remain under supervised release as the forensic review cleared legitimate operating funds. The extracted four million would be pursued through recovery actions. Derek and Marlene faced the combined weight of the violence documented at 3:07 a.m. and the two-year pattern of theft that had followed my father’s death. Their early attempts to frame the matter as a temporary domestic crisis or an estate misunderstanding had already failed against the record.
I slept in the secure location without the blue light of the smoke-detector camera in the ceiling. The cameras had completed their work. The evidence drive remained in Elena’s custody. The fear that had once made me slow had been converted into sequence, documentation, and the decision to let them reach for one final thing while the ground under them was already gone.
They had believed the house was theirs.
They had believed the company answered to them.
They had believed grief had made me permanent background.

The record had answered each belief in order.
I began the slower work of rebuilding the operational life my father had left me, now free of the two people who had treated it as inventory to be extracted. The process would take time. The evidence package ensured that time would not be used against me again.
