Chapter 8: Full Forensic Scope

The deeper forensic review confirmed the scale of what they had taken.
Nearly four million dollars had been moved through layered vendor invoices and unauthorized transfers into accounts connected to Marlene over a twenty-two-month period. The forged voting-authorization document had been executed three months after my father’s death, using a signature that failed every standard comparison. Derek’s access to operational control of the construction company had been built on that forgery and maintained by my prolonged silence under grief. The silence was finished. The forgery was now a central exhibit.
Elena’s team worked with the financial-crimes unit to map every secondary account and every shell vendor. The pattern was consistent and deliberate. No single transfer was large enough to trigger automatic review in isolation. Together they formed a clear extraction of value from the company my father had built. The morning attempts to remove the physical records after the freeze only strengthened the demonstration of intent.
I began the process of reclaiming operational visibility. Temporary management protocols were put in place under court supervision so that legitimate company functions could continue while the forensic work finished. Employees who had worked under my father received clear notice that control was returning to the rightful structure. A few who had aligned too closely with Derek during the intervening years found their access reduced. Most simply returned to the work itself.

Derek’s attorneys shifted strategy by the third day, focusing on my mental state after the loss of my father and suggesting that the cameras and the financial investigation were signs of paranoia rather than evidence. Elena answered with the timestamps, the metadata, the independent signature analysis, and the fact that the cameras had captured them packing the forged document and the drive into bags while discussing the need to move remaining assets before I surfaced. Paranoia does not produce synchronized multi-angle records and mapped four-million-dollar trails.
Marlene’s position deteriorated in parallel. The accounts tied to her name were frozen. The silk-robe authority she had exercised in the guest wing no longer existed outside the locked interview rooms.
