Chapter 2: The Hospital Decision
The room spun. I woke in a hospital bed with an officer beside me and Elena gripping my hand.
“You’re safe,” she said.
“No,” I whispered. “Not yet.”
Elena leaned closer.
I looked at the clock, then at the sealed evidence drive she had brought.
“Freeze the company accounts,” I said. “And don’t arrest them yet.”
Her eyes sharpened. “What are you planning?”
I looked at the evidence drive and took a slow breath.
“I’m letting them steal one more thing.”
Elena did not argue. She had reviewed the preliminary financial files I sent six weeks earlier. She understood the difference between a single night of violence and a two-year pattern of theft wrapped in the appearance of marital care. She also understood that timing could turn a strong case into an airtight one.
The officer took a formal statement while a nurse documented the fresh bruises and the older marks that had never been reported. I answered every question in the flat, precise language I had once used for audit reports. Emotion was irrelevant. Sequence and evidence were what mattered.
When the officer stepped out, Elena sat on the edge of the bed.
“They’re going to notice you’re gone by morning,” she said. “Derek will call. Marlene will perform concern. Then they’ll start moving money if they think the window is closing.”
“I know. That’s why the accounts need to freeze quietly first. Let them try. Record the attempt. Then we close everything.”
She nodded once.
“The smoke-detector footage is already secured. The financial package is indexed. The forged voting authorization is flagged. What’s the additional piece you’re waiting for?”
“The investors,” I said. “Derek told me they’re coming at eight. He still thinks I’m cleaning the office for them. If he and Marlene try to present the company as stable while I’m missing, or if they attempt one more transfer before the freeze fully locks, we catch the intent in real time.”
Elena studied me for a long moment.
“You understand that delaying the arrest increases certain risks.”
“I understand that arresting them now lets them claim a single domestic incident and temporary confusion over paperwork. Letting them continue for a few more hours while the accounts are already frozen gives us the final documented act of attempted theft under pressure. That’s the difference between a case and a conclusion.”

“I’ll make the calls. You rest until the medical clearance comes through. Then we move.”
