Chapter 1: The Papers

The Franklin County courthouse felt colder than usual that afternoon.

Elena Caldwell sat beside her attorney, one hand resting on the curve of her eight-month pregnant belly. She had worn a simple navy dress that still couldn’t hide how far along she was. Her feet were swollen inside her shoes, and her back ached from sitting too long. But none of that compared to the exhaustion in her chest.

Across the aisle, David Caldwell looked perfectly put together in a navy suit. His wedding ring was gone. Next to him sat Jessica Price, twenty-eight years old, blonde, and wearing a smug little smile that made Elena’s stomach turn.

They thought they had won.

The judge, Rebecca Whitman, looked over the documents one last time before speaking.

“Mrs. Caldwell, according to your petition, you are requesting an immediate divorce and surrendering any claim to the marital home, savings accounts, vehicles, and the business you and Mr. Caldwell built together. Is that correct?”

Elena’s attorney shifted uncomfortably in his seat.

“Your Honor, my client has been under significant emotional stress—”

“I asked Mrs. Caldwell,” Judge Whitman interrupted firmly.

Elena lifted her chin.

“Yes, Your Honor. He can have all of it.”

A few people in the gallery whispered. Jessica let out a short, satisfied laugh.

David shot her a sharp look.

“Jessica,” he muttered under his breath.

But it was too late.

Judge Whitman’s eyes narrowed.

“One more interruption from you, Ms. Price, and you will be removed from this courtroom.”

Jessica quickly pressed her lips together.

Elena took a slow breath. Her hand moved over her belly again, feeling the baby kick.

“I don’t want the house where he brought her while I was at prenatal appointments,” she said, her voice steady even though her hands were shaking. “I don’t want the money he spent on her. I don’t want the cars or the furniture. I just want my baby to grow up far away from both of them.”

David suddenly stood up.

“That’s ridiculous!” he snapped. “She’s trying to manipulate everyone. She’s emotional and unstable. She wants the court to feel sorry for her.”

“Sit down, Mr. Caldwell,” the judge said coldly.

David’s face turned red, but he sat back down.

Elena finally looked at him directly.

“You already took the only things that mattered,” she said quietly.

For the first time, David’s confident expression cracked.

Jessica rolled her eyes and smirked again, but Elena didn’t care anymore.

She was done.

She just wanted this to be over so she could go home and focus on her baby.

But before the judge could continue, something changed in the room.

Judge Whitman slowly closed the thick file in front of her and stood up.

The entire courtroom went still.

“Before I issue any ruling,” she said, her voice calm but serious, “there is another matter this court must address.”

David’s shoulders stiffened.

The judge continued.

“Earlier today, outside this courtroom, I spoke with a young child who was crying near the vending machines. She told me something very disturbing about her father… and about a woman who had been cruel to her.”

Jessica’s smile vanished.

David’s face turned completely white.

“What are you talking about?” he asked, his voice suddenly hoarse.

Judge Whitman ignored him and nodded to the bailiff.

“Please bring the child into the courtroom.”

The large wooden doors at the back of the room slowly opened.

Every single person turned to look.

A little girl around six years old stepped inside. She had light brown hair tied in a messy ponytail and was wearing a yellow cardigan that looked a little too big for her. In her arms, she clutched a worn stuffed rabbit tightly against her chest.

The moment Elena saw her, her breath caught in her throat.

She didn’t know why, but something about the little girl felt familiar.

David, on the other hand, looked like he had seen a ghost.

His face drained of all color. His hands gripped the edge of the table so hard his knuckles turned white.

Jessica looked confused for a second… then her eyes widened in horror.

The little girl stopped in the middle of the aisle. She looked scared, but she didn’t cry. She just held her rabbit tighter and looked straight at the judge.

Judge Whitman’s voice softened.

“Come here, sweetheart. You’re safe here.”

The little girl walked slowly toward the front of the courtroom. When she reached the judge’s bench, she stopped and looked around nervously.

Then her eyes landed on David.

For a moment, she just stared at him.

David looked like he wanted to disappear.

The judge spoke gently.

“Can you tell everyone your name, honey?”

The little girl hugged her rabbit closer.

“My name is Lily,” she said in a small, clear voice.

Then she pointed straight at David.

“And that’s my daddy.”

The entire courtroom went completely silent.

Elena felt like the floor had disappeared beneath her.

May you like

David Caldwell had a daughter.

And from the way he was looking at Lily right now… he had been hiding her for a very long time.
